MENTAL HEALTH LEGAL SERVICE (Queensland Advocacy Incorporated) Queensland Advocacy Incorporated (QAI) is recruiting a lawyer and a paralegal advocate to provide legal advice & representation services to people who are consumers of mental health services in Queensland. Lawyer The Lawyer will conduct QAIs Mental Health Legal Service project, a new initiative focused on the provision of legal advice & representation to people with disability whose treatment (and detention) within Queensland Mental Health facilities is subject to review by the Mental Health Review Tribunal. The position is project funded through LPITAF, administered by the Queensland Attorney Generals office. The lawyer will be employed on a full-time basis and will supervise & work with a part-time paralegal advocate to conduct the Mental Health Legal Service. Paralegal Advocate The Paralegal Advocate will work under supervision of QAIs Mental Health Legal Service lawyer to empower people by providing information, legal advice, referral and practical assistance (including direct service to clients) to access services and make decisions about legal and law related issues. The paralegal will represent clients of the service in hearings of the Mental Health Review Tribunal. The Paralegal Advocate will be employed on a part-time basis. A NEW Program at QAI Called Justice Support Program

This is a Pilot program that will be running for 10 months. The Justice Support Program offers A FREE Service for people with disability if they are a witness, detained or a victim of Crime. We will be offering this service 24 hours a day 365 days. This service will be utilising both Staff and Volunteers to attend both Police Stations and Courts in North Brisbane Area. We aim to offer support from start to finish, i.e. Police Station to the end of Court. We will hopefully also have a after hours list of Lawyers who will be prepared to offer advise to our clients over the phone while they are attending the Police Station.
