Advocating for the fundamental needs, rights and lives and protection of the most vulnerable people with disability in Queensland
|
Queensland Advocacy Incorporated (QAI) is an independent, community-based systems advocacy and legal advocacy organisation for people with disability in Queensland, Australia. .
QAI's mission is to promote, protect and defend, through advocacy, the fundamental needs and right and lives of the most vulnerable people with disability in Queensland. QAI does this by engaging in systems advocacy work - through campaigns directed to attitudinal, law and policy change, and by supporting the development of a range of advocacy initiatives in this State.
QAI is part of the Australian Network of Disability Advocacy Services funded by the Australan Government under the Commonwealth Disability Services Act and is run by a management committee, the majority of whom are people with disability.
QAI works consistently within Social Advocacy and Social Justice principles. It has structured its organisation to ensure its accountability to the most vulnerable people with disability by incorporating qualified people with disability in key board positions and other areas of function.
QAI employs three permanent full-time workers and two permanent part time workers who are involved in legislative and public policy reform, research, writing, public speaking, policy development, data processing, administration and organisation.
The experience of QAI Committee members includes advocacy, institutional living, legal practice and community work.
To be relevant to a broad constituency QAI employs staff who understand aboriginal issues, migrant issues, womens issues, tenancy issues, and welfare issues as well as disability issues.
